EarthShips and Hempcrete

The first workshop of the season will be focused on EarthShip design as well as hempcrete construction. Earthships are the brainchild of architect Michael Reynolds out of Taos, New Mexico. He has been perfecting the design of these homes over the last four decades and has been able to showcase their practicality in various environments all over the world.

Hempcrete sequesters carbon from the environment for 60 years. It petrifies into a monolith of limestone growing lighter and stronger each year. It is not only breathable, it is hygroscopic, regulating moisture in the building. It is mold, mildew and pest proof after three years of curing. Over time it becomes fireproof, waterproof and earthquake proof. There is very little waste as you can use for walls and insulation for flooring and ceiling by simply changing the ratio of lime, sand and hemp hurd. Eliminating caulk, tyvac, blown insulation, drywall and other toxic materials. Hempcrete is a truly green building material.

Over the weekend, participants will learn how to use tires as the foundation of a home. We will learn packing methods, wall layers, layout and design. We will cover Earthship principles and theory. Another aspect of the weekend is building a bottle wall with hempcrete.

Course includes 3 meals a day, and camping is available. Another perk of this class is that Valley View hot springs is only a 10 minute drive away, so don’t miss this opportunity to learn natural building in a stunning and healing environment.

This 2 day weekend class will be taught by Earthship Academy graduate, Goldie Mariola, and experienced Hemp builder, Suzanne Rouge. Goldie has worked on many tire homes in Crestone as well as in Seattle, Nebraska, Guatemala and Argentina.Goldie lives in an Earthship that she and her partner built themselves. She is the Director of the Ongoing Education Series and leads workshops year round in the San Luis Valley.

Suzanne’s first experience with hempcrete was a workshop with world renowned hempcrete builder, Steve Allin from Ireland in 2016.Innovation and exploration are a part of a budding industry and Suzanne’s goal is to educate others about the many amazing attributes of hempcrete. She has participated in presenting at the Hemp Expo and Crestone Energy Fair. Her dream is to create collaborative build teams to stimulate SLV economy.
